James Gunn’s Superman comes with the weight of the world on its shoulders, quite literally as this may just be DC’s last stand to bring a successful cinematic movie to the table to help push further DC films forward.
If this film flops the future of DC remains uncertain and this film will serve as a benchmark (similar to Iron Man did for Marvel) for what’s to come.
If anyone can do it, it’s James Gunn. The man in charge of a franchise that keeps my fading flame for Marvel flickering dimly as Guardians delivered not only in the first instalment, improved in the second but then took it to emotional levels unknown in the third.
Should Superman find its cape and soar to new heights it’ll be no surprise with James as the helm who along with Peter Safran have served as co-CEO of DC Studios since 2022.
A whole slate of DC films are in the works including the animated series Creature Commandos and a Sgt. Rock movie starring Daniel Craig.
What sadly didn’t go in the film’s favour before release was the fact that Henry Cavill wouldn’t be reprising his role of Superman/Clark Kent. Fans were in uproar as David Corenswet replaced Henry despite Henry himself being confident he was going to be playing the character once again.
Awkward.
This particular version won’t be an origin story, the film will start with Superman already established and the film will start in the middle of the action. Lois and Clark already know one another, Lex hates Superman etc we’re front and centre.
I think approaching it in this way is much better, we’ve seen the origins story all too often so let’s just get on with it, shall we?
Plenty of action is set for this upcoming film and the teaser gives us a glimpse of that. Top Gun: Maverick was an inspiration for Gunn with this movie with some of the aerial drone shots and other captured footage shown on screen.
If you listen to the first few notes of the teaser trailer though you can almost hear a Top Gun theme song reminiscent of the Steve Stevens guitar tone used in the anthem from the hit 1986 movie.
Coincidence?
The famous John Williams score returning (as shown on a social media post) will certainly have fans drooling at the thought. Just simple things like that will put fans on side immediately.
What I will say is that even on YouTube the trailer looks crisp and visually stunning so seeing that Superman will have an IMAX release is no surprise. This is going to look phenomenal in IMAX format, there’s a real crispness to the cinematography that makes it look more realistic than the cheap-looking CGI we’ve become used to in recent DC releases.
Also, it’s about damn time we had more bright DC movies. Everything is so drab, dull and dark and you only need to click pause at any point in this teaser for there to be a crisp, vibrant image on screen. That’s a major selling point for me, I actually want to be able to see what’s happening on screen unlike many a DC release which plunges our subjects into darkness in a ode to emo music and gothic aesthetic.
Naturally, fans are very surface-level with their appreciation sometimes so I’m sure the only focal point here for the masses will be the inclusion of Krytpo (he is cute though bless him) but I’ll reserve full judgment until July 11th, 2025 when this film hits the big screens but so far, so good.
A solid teaser and hopefully a solid indication of DC finally going in the right direction. It is long overdue!
