With a career spanning four decades, Demi Moore finally scooped up her first-ever award with a Golden Globes win for her role in the body-horror film The Substance after being labelled a Popcorn Actress by a producer once upon a time.
Many entertainment sites took to socials to hail her ‘comeback’ which I thought was very disrespectful as she never went anywhere and after countless roles in which she should have scooped an award she’s finally recognised for her stunning performance in this grotesque and freaky horror film.
When scooping the award Demi Moore took to the stage and told a very telling story about a producer who once called her a ‘popcorn actress’.
A popcorn actress refers to someone who features in a film with no emotional depth or engagement needed from its audience, a very sit-back and disengage-your-brain style of performance.
Whatever producer told her that, clearly doesn’t know Jack.
She said the following after recounting the story:
I made that mean that this wasn’t something I allowed to have. That I could do movies that were successful but that I couldn’t be acknowledged. I bought in, and I believed that.Moore said.
Maybe this was it, maybe that this was complete, that I’ve done what I’m supposed to do.
It was then that I had this magical, bold, courageous, out-of-the-box, absolutely bonkers script come across my desk called ‘The Substance,’ and the universe told me, ‘You’re not done.’
In these moments when we don’t think we’re smart enough or pretty enough or skinny enough or successful [enough] … or basically just not enough, I had a woman say to me, ‘Just know you will never be enough, but you can know the value of your worth if you just put down the measuring stick.

Outside of the quite disgusting way it was called a ‘comeback’ I commend Demi for the grit and determination despite these stupid comments to show the world who’s boss and to kickstart what is going to be a very fun awards season for her!
Not bad for a ‘Popcorn Actress’ eh?
