K. Michelle Refutes Reporter’s Claim About Her Country Roots

K. Michelle had to set a reporter straight after being questioned about her deep-rooted ties to country music during a recent sit-down. The ‘Can’t Raise A Man’ singer wasn’t here for misleading comments about her country come-up.

K. Michelle Corrects A Reporter

During an American Songwriter interview last week, things went a little left when the reporter mistakenly assumed K. Michelle was fairly new to the country scene.

The interviewer asked her to talk about her relationship with the musical genre, saying she felt like the general public had “just kind of got” her. Additionally, she claimed that K. Michelle “didn’t grow up” with country music roots, which also led her to want to know what had brought her to Nashville. K. Michelle wasn’t having any of it and quickly corrected the narrative. She explained that she absolutely grew up in country music, emphasizing:

“I did grow up in country music. I’m from Memphis, Tennessee. I got a scholarship for yodeling and that’s how I paid for college.”

Sis let it be known that people “do this all the time,” assuming she’s new to the country space. With a shady smirk, she pointed at the reporter, saying her start was only “new to YOU” after becoming familiar with K when she was previously asked to perform and pay tribute to Naomi Judd in 2023. The former reality star made it clear that she has been in touch with her country music roots for as long as she can remember, despite being told she couldn’t sing country music because she’s Black. K. Michelle added, “I didn’t fly here, I grew here.”

K. Michelle Reacts To The Reporter’s Comment About Country Charts

K. Michelle remained collected, expressing how “happy” she is to sing the music she was raised on. She threw a subtle jab, noting she’s thrilled that “people like you are just discovering me” in this space. A space she’s been professionally part of for years, mind you. The reporter, still pushing, responded that she wasn’t just discovering her but hadn’t heard her “on contemporary country radio yet.” Unfazed, K. Michelle politely fired back, pointing out the lack of women on country radio overall, saying, “You don’t hear a lot of women on country radio, period, right now.”

She doubled down, explaining, “And you really don’t hear a Black one,” before confidently declaring, “You will. You’re about to.”
