Saw fans rejoice as the future of the franchise is looking bright with Blumhouse finalising a long-negotiated deal to acquire the franchise from Twisted Pictures.
Lionsgate who also have an ownership stake will continue to distribute the franchise’s films but the Blumhouse deal allows the franchise to be brought back to James Wan who directed the first Saw film alongside Leigh Whannell.
Having James and Leigh back to potentially helm the franchise is a very exciting prospect indeed, they started this journey together with the very first film released back in 2004 and now they can look to forward the franchise after the very successful previous instalment (Saw X).
Saw has defined an entire generation of horror and has grossed $1 billion dollars at the box office across the 10 films made, quite a fast forward from the humble beginnings of the original movie which was made for $1.2 million.
The original went onto become one of the most profitable horror films of all time opening with $18.2 million domestically and earning $104 million worldwide with the home entertainment release being equally as impressive.
With Blumhouse at the helm it’s also not out of the question that a Saw house could return to Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios theme park sometime in the future and THAT is a very exciting prospect indeed!
It was back in 2017 when Universal last had a Saw themed maze and with this recent acquisition and with multiple Blumhouse IP featuring at the Halloween event a future maze certainly isn’t out of the question.
