Cheating scandals are traumatic enough, but it’s even worse if you happen to learn about the affair in a horrible way. (Cheaters, honesty is the best policy!)
So, from phone hacking to Google Alerts, here’s how some of Hollywood’s biggest celebs found out that their partners were unfaithful.
1.
In 2004, just ten days after she won the Oscar for Best Actress, Halle Berry read an article in Star magazine that said her husband of three years, Eric Benét, was cheating on her. In an interview with Oprah that same year, Halle said that her initial response was to file a lawsuit against the magazine for publishing false reports; however, Eric soon came clean.
“He said, ‘I need to tell you something, that article is true,'” Halle recalled, admitting that she was truly blindsided by his actions. “I had a perfect marriage. This is one of the kindest men I’ve ever known on many levels. It was heartbreaking. I just couldn’t understand why.”
After Eric’s initial confession, Halle was committed to working on the marriage, although it eventually became clear that Eric had cheated with multiple women throughout their relationship, and they divorced the following year. “I had an emotional breakdown,” she recalled.

During an interview with Jennifer Lawrence in 2017, Kim Kardashian revealed that she once used her phone-hacking skills to uncover that her ex-boyfriend was cheating on her while they were supposed to be celebrating her birthday.
“I was at dinner with all of my best friends, put it on speakerboard, wondering where my boyfriend was,” she recalled. “His voicemail— he was flying in town to meet another girl on my birthday and lied to me that he was in another city.”
Kim did not name the unfaithful ex, but Jennifer attempted to narrow it down by asking, “I’m sorry that happened. Did you marry him?” Kim, who clarified that her phone-hacking days are far behind her, simply laughed it off.

In her 2019 memoir, Inside Out, Demi Moore tracked the highs and lows of her highly publicized marriage to Ashton Kutcher — including his alleged cheating. Among the revelations, Demi said she learned about Ashton’s infidelity via a Google Alert on her cellphone in 2011, which flagged an Us Weekly interview with a woman who claimed she’d had sex with him.
Discussing the Google Alert ordeal during a Good Morning America interview with Diane Sawyer, Demi said her initial reaction was to call Ashton and ask if it was true. “He admitted it right away, and I think my response was, ‘Are you fucking kidding me?'” she remembered. “That was it. And I think I could barely take a breath.” They announced their separation soon after, and their divorce was finalized in 2013. Ashton has since described the cheating scandal as “humiliating and embarrassing.”

I’ll never forget when the news broke in 2012 that Kristen Stewart had an affair with her married director, Rupert Sanders, while they were working together on Snow White and the Huntsman. And if I was shocked, I can’t imagine how Kristen’s then-boyfriend, Robert Pattinson, felt.
When the cheating scandal broke, Rob and Kristen had been together for around three years. And though we don’t know for sure, it was reported at the time that Rob found out about the affair when reporters at Us Weekly contacted his team to “tell them they were going to run the story.” “Kristen did not tell him about her cheating,” an anonymous insider claimed at the time, adding that Robert was apparently “completely blindsided by the news.”
In a statement confessing to the affair, Kristen said: “This momentary indiscretion has jeopardized the most important thing in my life, the person I love the most, Rob. I love him, I’m so sorry.” Perhaps for the good of the Breaking Dawn – Part 2 press tour, the Twilight costars were able to push through the drama. However, they parted ways for good in July 2013.

In 1997, Arnold Schwarzenegger engaged in an affair with a housekeeper that resulted in a pregnancy. The baby boy, Joseph, was born in October 1997, a few days after Arnold and his then-wife, Maria Shriver, welcomed their youngest child, Christopher. The identity of Joseph’s real father remained a secret for many years — until the resemblance between him and Arnold eventually became too obvious to deny, and the actor had to come clean to Maria, face-to-face.
In his 2023 Netflix docuseries, Arnold recalled confessing to Maria during a couples therapy session in 2011 when Joseph was a teenager. “I thought my heart stopped. And then I told the truth: ‘Yes, Maria, Joseph is my son,’” he remembered, adding that Maria — with whom he shares four children — was “obviously crushed.”
The news of Joseph’s paternity went public in May 2011, and Maria and Arnold announced their separation around the same time. In her 2025 memoir, Maria recalled that she was “consumed with grief and wracked with confusion, anger, fear, sadness, and anxiety” over the affair and the end of her marriage. “It broke my heart, it broke my spirit, it broke what was left of me,” she wrote. “I was unsure now of who I was, where I belonged. Honestly, it was brutal, and I was terrified.”

Debbie Reynolds first had suspicions that her husband, Eddie Fisher, was having an affair with their close friend Elizabeth Taylor in 1958 when it was discussed at a dinner party. “Everyone was sort of whispering, like, ‘Does she know…’ And I wanted to know what they were whispering about, but nobody would tell me what they were whispering about, so I figured it was about me,” she told Entertainment Tonight in 1988. “Then I put two and two together, because I could hear that certain [words], ‘Eddie’ and ‘Elizabeth’ and such.”
Debbie decided to call Eddie in New York, and the affair was confirmed when Elizabeth picked up on the other end. Recalling this moment of realization, Debbie said, “It takes a long time to realize a situation is for real, and then you finally face it. Then you realize that is what is happening, dummy, and just hang up the phone and let him come home and discuss it.”
Eddie and Elizabeth married in 1959, but the marriage crumbled only a few years later when Elizabeth met and fell in love with Richard Burton while filming Cleopatra. By the early 2000s, Elizabeth and Debbie were able to rekindle their friendship before their respective deaths in 2011 and 2016.

If there’s one person who understands the trauma of a cheating scandal, it’s our girl Khloé Kardashian. Sadly, Khloé has experienced cheating in past relationships, but nothing has played out quite as publicly as Tristan Thompson’s repeated infidelities between 2018 and 2021.
In an interview with Amanda Hirsch in 2022, Khloé confirmed that she learned of all three of Tristan’s public affairs at the same time that we did. “I find out with the rest of the world, which is, like, the most offensive part,” she said. “I mean, all of it is fucked up, but I just, like, can there be a little respect — could you have let me know before I find out on Daily Mail? That would be nice.”
For example, in late 2021, Tristan was exposed for cheating on Khloé for the third time when a woman filed lawsuits alleging that he was the father of her child. (He was the father, and you can read a full breakdown of the scandal here.) Kim was the first to see the paternity lawsuits online, and the moment she told Khloé was all caught on camera for The Kardashians. “They were filming, and Kim was in the gym, and she, in real time, found out the information,” Khloé recalled. “I found out through Kim. A sister always tells me.”

In July 2005, Jude Law and Sienna Miller were a happily engaged celebrity It-couple, until news broke that Jude was cheating on her with his kids’ nanny.
Like the rest of the world, Sienna found out about the affair when the nanny discussed her relationship with Jude in excruciating detail during an exclusive interview with the Sunday Mirror. Days later, Jude issued a public apology, in which he came clean and apologized directly to Sienna for the “pain” he had caused.
At the time, Sienna was just 23 and living a very public life while starring in a West End production of Shakespeare’s As You Like It. In a 2020 interview with The Daily Beast, she recalled the humiliation of the ordeal, describing it as “one of the most challenging moments” of her life. “With that level of public heartbreak, to have to get out of a bed, let alone stand in front of 800 people every night, it’s just the last thing you want to do,” she said.

In 2009, Brandi Glanville suspected that her husband of seven years, Eddie Cibrian, was having an affair with his Northern Lights costar, LeAnn Rimes. LeAnn was also married at the time, and the affair eventually came to light when security footage of Eddie and LeAnn kissing at a restaurant was published online.
Eddie and LeAnn wound up getting married, and they’re still together to this day. In 2013, Brandi wrote about the aftermath of Eddie’s affair for Glamour, saying that her “heartache probably lasted a lot longer than it should have.” “In the old days, you broke up with someone, you never saw em again. You’re not seeing pictures of how in love they are,” she wrote. “I started to drink too much. I would cry all day. I began taking an antidepressant. I got a DUI and realized I needed to wake up and let go. I said to myself, ‘You know what, Brandi? You have a life to live. Why are you obsessing over these two people? You know Eddie loves your children. It’s time to do you.'”

In March 2016, Iggy Azalea and Nick Young’s engagement was rocked by public scrutiny when a secretly-taped video surfaced online, showing the NBA player admitting to cheating. A few months later, in June, Iggy announced their split on Instagram, citing “trust” issues.
While it initially seemed that the leaked video was the catalyst for the breakup, Iggy soon revealed that she ended their engagement after she “found out he had brought other women into our home while I was away and caught them on security footage.”

In Kevin Hart’s 2019 Netflix docuseries, his wife, Eniko, revealed that she found out about his 2017 cheating scandal via a DM from a stranger. “They sent me an edited video of Kevin, and you know, another woman,” she said. “I was about seven or eight months pregnant. I was having breakfast, I opened my phone, and I immediately lost it. I called him, I’m crying, I’m pissed. Right then and there, I kept saying, ‘How the fuck did you let that happen?'”
At the time, Kevin posted an apology video on Instagram, and he and Eniko were able to work things out. Years later, Eniko said focusing on her pregnancy was the thing that got her through the public humiliation. “I wasn’t ready at the time to just give up on my family,” she said. “I wanted Kenzo to be able to know his dad and grow up, so it was a lot…It was a lot for me, but we’ve been through it, we’ve gone through it, we passed it, and he’s a better man now because of it.”

In 2010, Eva Longoria filed for divorce from her husband of three years, Tony Parker, after she reportedly found “hundreds of text messages from another woman” on his phone.
In April 2011, Eva discussed the divorce for the first time during an interview with Piers Morgan, and broke down in tears when he asked how it “all exploded” in front of the world. “It was heartbreaking. I think it was disappointing because I had such an identity in being Mrs. Parker and being a wife. And so when that’s taken away from you, you go, Who am I? It was hard,” Eva said, admitting that she felt humiliated by the way it played out so publicly. “He’s not a bad person. He just wanted something else.”

Two decades after they first began dating, Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale’s marriage imploded in 2015 when one of their nannies allegedly discovered explicit texts between Gavin and another woman on an iPad.
“Gwen’s suspicions were confirmed…Gavin’s texts were linked to the iPad and could be seen. They talked about meeting up to have sex, and she sent naked photos,” a source told E! News, claiming that Gwen “immediately confronted Gavin and he tried to deny everything.”
Neither of the musicians have ever confirmed the iPad story. But in 2024, Gavin said on the Amy & T.J. podcast that he felt “shame” over his divorce from Gwen, particularly because of how it impacted their three children. “I feel bad for my kids, that’s it,” he said. “I wish I could have found a way to not have that in their lives.”

And from one iCloud-related discovery to another, we’ll finish with the alleged Apple Watch that was said to be involved in Jason Sudeikis and Olivia Wilde’s 2020 split. Allow me to refresh your memory.
In 2022, a nanny, who said that she worked for Olivia and Jason for three years, made some wild allegations about the demise of the couple’s relationship in a tell-all interview with the Daily Mail. Among the claims, she alleged that Jason was left “brokenhearted” after discovering text messages between Olivia and Harry Styles on an Apple Watch.
For context, Olivia and Jason announced their separation in November 2020. And by January 2021, Olivia was romantically linked to Harry, whom she’d met around September 2020 when she cast him in her film, Don’t Worry Darling. Harry and Olivia were together for about two years before breaking up in late 2022.
We must make it very clear that we can’t say for sure that this was a cheating situation. Olivia has maintained that her relationship with Jason “was over long before” she even met Harry, telling Vanity Fair in 2022 that reports she “left Jason for Harry” are “completely inaccurate.” On top of that, Jason and Olivia have slammed their former nanny’s claims, saying in a joint statement to People magazine shortly after the Daily Mail story came out: “As parents, it is incredibly upsetting to learn that a former nanny of our two young children would choose to make such false and scurrilous accusations about us publicly.”
To conclude, this one may not be strictly true. But it does serve as a fair warning to anyone, like me, who has a tendency to leave their Apple Watch lying around the house.
Welp, this is all pretty horrifying to think about. But LMK your thoughts on the comments.
