One of my all time favourite movies is nearly approaching 30 years old, can you believe that?! But the craziest thing is, it still holds up to this day and so here’s the reasons why I feel the original Space Jam movie is still relevant all these years later.
In a universe where we pretend the Lebron James remake of the movie doesn’t exist we go back to a simpler time when superstar Basketball icon Michael Jordan was called to shoot a movie alongside The Looney Toons.
Released in 1996 Space Jam has become a timeless classic that captured the heart of multiple generations and saw Michael Jordan go from sports icon to global icon the second he was shown on the silver screen.
This blend of live action and animation made Space Jam a unique, funny, sport-focused and nostalgic film that could be enjoyed by people of all ages and approaching thirty years old its still fondly remembered across the globe.
When thinking about how Space Jam is still relevant all these years later I can think of several reasons why it still holds a special place in my heart.

The unique collaboration between a real-life superstar and on screen animated stars was groundbreaking for the time the film was released.

At the heart of the story, the original Space Jam movie is all about belief and friendship.
A story of determination, teamwork and friendship not to mention rising up in the face of adversity when all of the odds are stacked against you.
It’s hard to convey a positive message in the world lately when all we see is doom and gloom around us so I feel as though we do have to take a look of our positivity from the escapism we get from movies the majority of the time.
Viewers of all ages can resonate with the messages that the film portrays where you believe in yourself whilst also believing in the strength you can have as a group.
Whether that group is your friends, or your family the message is there and the message is clear.
A timeless message for a timeless feature film.
An Iconic Soundtrack
Certainly a case of separating the music from the artist when it comes to the most iconic song in this movie but Space Jam served up some other absolute bangers from artists such as Seal, LL Cool J and Coolio and each individual song stands alone as a classic further complimenting and cementing the status of this movie.
I feel as though the soundtrack of a movie has to be as iconic as the film itself and this one certainly lives up to those expectations.
The music complemented the film’s energetic and exciting atmosphere, enhancing the overall experience. The soundtrack, filled with memorable tunes, is still a favorite among fans and stands as a testament to the film’s cultural impact.
Intergenerational Appeal
For those who grew up in the 90’s this movie stands as a nostalgia trip.
For me, I went to my local video store and rented a VHS copy of the movie and was swept away.
I sat in our living room with family and I was swept away from start to finish. Watching it back now I can relive those memories and that’s why it’ll hold a special place in my heart along with other films around that same era such as Flubber.
The film’s timeless humour and the Looney Tunes’ enduring popularity ensure that new generations can enjoy and appreciate it as well.

Whereas many films made in the 90s with special effects just don’t hold up today I feel as though Space Jam is the exception.
Groundbreaking for the time the integration between 2D animation and live-action felt seamless and that’s a true testament to all of those who worked on the movie.
Even by today’s standards it still doesn’t feel outdated or out place and serves as a benchmark for seamless integration between 2D and live action imagery.

Packed full of celebrity cameos and nods to classic Warner Bros. cartoons Space Jam revels in its winks and nods and rewards dedicated fans by offering something new every single time you watch it.
You’ll need a sharp eye to spot them all as the subtle cultural references and easter eggs run wild in Space Jam.
