Resident Evil Death Island Review: All Bang No Bite

Zombies go to Alcatraz in this animated adventure that has equal amounts of bang and bite. Here’s our Resident Evil Death Island review.

Agent Chris Redfield and his team investigate a zombie outbreak in San Francisco. They follow a clue that leads them to Alcatraz Island, where a new horror awaits them

Oh how far animated movies have come in the Resident Evil franchise. What an absolute joy it is to sit down and watch these beautiful landscapes, detailed characters and splendid voice acting that throws us straight into this zombie infested world.

Resident Evil Death Island

It’s 2014 and Death Island takes place after Resident Evil: Vendetta but before Resident Evil 7: Biohazard. Droolworthy action sequences lure us in and the creatures are vibrant, detailed and rather terrifying but Death Island does have its faults.

For all the epic chase sequences and action sequences when the film tries to develop narrative or some sort of slower pace it just gets boring. It gets quite tedious as there’s not much depth within the story to keep you invested with you only watching the film to see the next big fight sequence or action point.

Resident Evil Death Island Review

Seeing all of your favourite characters on screen together is a nostalgia trip that will get die hard Resident Evil fans through this one and whilst the animation has to be commended it still feels like there is a disconnect with the audience.

Conveying emotion is almost near impossible still as the characters feel very static and emotionless and that’s a real shame as animation is certainly capable of portraying this in this tech savvy age.

Resident Evil Animation

A film that lives for the action sequences but just can’t sustain a cohesive story that I feel invested in whatsoever. Some of the camera angles and pans for fight sequences are just drool worthy and if this film was just a compilation of those events with a bog standard story it would have impressed me tenfold.

Resident Evil Death Island is full of energy one minute and flagging the next. I feel as though it needs a big shot of adrenaline at points just to get the pacing right. If you’re looking for a solid addition to the animated franchise you sadly won’t find it here.

If you want an action showreel of zombie killing action then you’ll certainly quench your thirst with this one. Resident Evil Death Island sadly stumbles more than it succeeds.
