Rob Reiner, the director of When Harry Met Sally and Stand by Me, has been found dead inside his Los Angeles home with his wife Michele Singer.
Investigators believe the filmmaker and actor, 78, and Singer, 68, suffered stab wounds and have launched an investigation, though police said no suspects have been sought at this time.
A spokesperson for the Reiner family told CNN: “It is with profound sorrow that we announce the tragic passing of Michele and Rob Reiner. We are heartbroken by this sudden loss, and we ask for privacy during this unbelievably difficult time.”
Meanwhile, Los Angeles Police Department deputy chief Alan Hamilton told a press conference that the investigation was being handled by the LAPD’s robbery homicide division, stating it would “continue over the coming days”.
Reiner, the son of comedy legend Carl, met Singer in 1989 while he was directing the romantic comedy When Harry Met Sally, starring Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan.
The director’s other credits include This is Spinal Tap, The Princess Bride, Misery and A Few Good Men, while his acting roles range from sitcom All in the Family to films Sleepless in Seattle, The First Wives Club and Martin Scorsese’s The Wolf of Wall Street.

Monty Python star Eric Idle has claimed he spoke on the phone with Rob Reiner the night before he died on Sunday.
Writing on X/Twitter, Idle said: “Rob Reiner was a lovely man. I spoke to him last night for over an hour. I always enjoyed his company.
“I met him at his Dad’s in 1975. He was telling me about fiming at Stonehenge and his thoughts for the future. This is so awful. I shall miss him. A clever, talented and very thoughtful man. So awful.”

The news of Rob Reiner and Michele Singer’s deaths has prompted an outpouring of tributes from across the world of entertainment and politics.
A spokesperson for Norman Lear, who created All in the Family (Reiner’s breakout role), said he was “devastated” by the news.
“Norman often referred to Rob as a son, and their close relationship was extraordinary, to us and the world,” a statement read. “Norman would have wanted to remind us that Rob and Michele spent every breath trying to make this country a better place.”
Elijah Wood said he was “horrified to hear” the news, while John Cusack, who starred in Reiner’s 1985 comedy The Sure Thing, wrote: “Shocked by the death of Rob Reiner – a great man.”

Rob Reiner’s romance with Michele inspired When Harry Met Sally
Rob Reiner met his future wife Michele Singer while shooting When Harry Met Sally – and their real-life romance inspired the ending of the film.
The original ending of the film did not show Harry Billy Crystal) and Sally (Meg Ryan) ending up together, with Reiner telling CNN in 2024: “It was going to be the two of them seeing each other after years, talking and then walking away from each other.”
Reiner wrote this ending before he met Singer, but after being introduced by the film’s cinematographer, Addams Family director Barry Sonnenfeld, he had a change of heart.

Who is Michele Singer, Rob Reiner’s wife?
Michele Singer, who was found dead with her husband Rob Reiner on Sunday, was a photographer, producer and actor who met her husband on the set of When Harry Met Sally in 1989.
As producer, Singer worked on Reiner’s films Shock and Awe” and Spinal Tap II: The End Continues, a sequel to This Is Spinal Tap released earlier this year, and was Emmy nominated for Albert Brooks documentary Defending My Life.
She also had a role in Nora Ephron’s Christmas film Mixed Nuts, starring Steve Martin.
As a couple, they campaigned for several notable causes, including marriage equality, and assisted in founding the American Foundation for Equal Rights, which supported same-sex marriage in California.
Reiner said in 2016: “I can honestly say the reason I’ve done as many things in the political sphere is largely because of her. She is my Bunsen burner that lights the flame in my ass.”

No suspects sought at this stage, say police
The Los Angeles Police Department said that no suspects are being sought at this stage in the deaths of Rob Reiner and Michele Singer.
“We are not looking for anyone as a suspect or in any other manner at this time,” LAPD Deputy Chief Alan Hamilton said at a news conference.
“We’re going to try to speak to every family member that we can to get to the facts of this investigation.”
Nobody has been detained, but the family member who discovered their bodies has been interviewed, a source close to the investigation said.
