Some of the best news I’ve read this year since the Scary Movie Wayans reboot announcement as creators Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg (of American Pie and Cobra Kai fame) have announced another Harold and Kumar movie is in the works! We’re getting Harold and Kumar 4!
Hollywood Reporter covered the official exclusive as Harold and Kumar 4 is officially in early development with Kal Penn and John Cho expected to return but no news of the almighty Neil Patrick Harris returning to the beloved franchise.
Both Jon and Hayden will pen the script with Josh Heald and Mandate Pictures will produce the stoner comedy but it’ll be a stoner comedy made in 2025 where marajuana is legal in most states so just how will they go about this?
Time will tell.
“We’re fired up to bring Harold and Kumar back in a return to the unapologetically R-rated, smoke-filled chaos that started it all,” Hurwitz and Schlossberg said in a statement to THR. “It’s high time they puff and pass their wisdom onto a new generation. Just don’t tell their kids.”
It was also rumoured that Hurwitz and Schlossberg were behind another American Pie project (set in Vegas) but nothing has come to light about that project since the rumours were doing the round just a couple of years ago.
The original Harold and Kumar film was so iconic I specifically took a trip to America to visit White Castle, the most incredible advert for the most delicious little burgers!
Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle released in 2004 and became a smash hit spurning two more sequels including 2008’s Harold & Kumar Escape From Guantanamo Bay and 2011’s A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas.
This stoner franchise has legs as it has grossed around $104 million worldwide!
I cannot wait to see what the guys have in store for this one and it’s great to have writers onboard who have no woke bones in their body so expect that good old fashioned R-Rated humour, a time where comedies were actually funny and I wholeheartedly embrace the return of comedies like that back on our big screens!
Did you know that if it wasn’t for Ryan Reynolds, yes Mr Deadpool himself then Harold and Kumar might never have been greenlit.
After Kal Penn and Ryan starred together in Van Wilder in 2002, Ryan said to Kal that when he gets his first lead, let him know and he’ll play the supporting guy.
When New Line were looking at the film they were concerned as the leads weren’t well known and they wanted to get three cameos in the movie so it felt like a more well-rounded theatrical experience.
They called up Ryan, paid him a nice $10,000 and just Ryan alone joining got the movie green-lit with an epic cameo as a nurse that has spawned millions of gifs and memes ever since. Read more about it on Deadline HERE.
