Hanukkah Celebration Turns Deadly At Sydney’s Bondi Beach

Officials say at least 15 people, including a child, were killed after two gunmen opened fire during a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach in Sydney on Sunday evening. The attack unfolded during Chanukah by the Sea, a public event drawing hundreds of families to the beachfront to mark the start of the Jewish holiday. Authorities have now identified the two shooters, ages 50 and 24. Police fatally shot the older suspect at the scene, while the younger was wounded and taken into custody. At least 42 others were injured, several critically, with victims ranging in age from 10 to 87.

Hero Bystander Helps Stop Bondi Beach Gunman

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese condemned the shooting as an “act of antisemitic terrorism, emphasizing that Bondi Beach had been “forever tarnished.” Witnesses described scenes of chaos as gunfire erupted around 6:45 p.m., sending beachgoers fleeing in panic. Video footage circulating online showed people running from the shoreline and two armed men dressed in black firing from an elevated footbridge. One bystander, later identified by local media as Ahmed al Ahmed, was hailed as a hero after tackling and disarming one of the attackers despite being shot twice.

Father and Son Identified As Suspects In Deadly Shooting

Authorities have since confirmed that the two gunmen involved in the Bondi Beach attack were a father and son. The younger suspect, 24-year-old Naveed Akram, remains hospitalized under police guard. Additionally, his father, 50-year-old Sajid Akram, was fatally shot during an exchange with police on Sunday. According to New South Wales Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon, Sajid was a legally licensed firearms holder for more than a decade and had six registered weapons. All have now been recovered from the scene. Officials stated that neither men were well known to authorities prior to the attack. Furthermore, investigators believe the pair acted alone, with no additional suspects currently being sought.
