Today I had an email in my inbox telling me to grab the new Stranger Things burger and wings at KFC, suckered into the marketing and hype for Stranger Things and the new season’s first episode airing soon, I went on down to my local KFC, INSTANT REGRET!
So this brand new flavoured burger is essentially a spicy zinger chicken fillet, cheese, crunchy slaw, burger dressing and a new sweet-and-spicy ‘secret sauce’ on a red glazed bun (you know the coloured ones that usually turn your stool weird colours).
It’s available as a meal with fries and a drink or as a box meal.
The Stranger Wings are also available to purchase. They include three classic chicken wings coated in a new hot sauce, which were VERY good! So let me just get the positives out of the way because I’m about to turn this whole review upside down.
I’m not sure what parallel universe served me up this burger but I couldn’t even bring myself to take a photo of it as this very poorly prepared burger was slopped together and already looked highly unappealing straight out of the box. I did, however, capture a video of the experience for you to indulge in my torture, I mean meal.
Stoke-On-Trent and KFC burger presentation has never been a match made in Kentucky Fried heaven, that’s for sure (one of the reasons I usually opt for anything but KFC around here).
Now that spicy zinger is always going to smack you in the face with its usual dose of heavy salt-induced punches, but with the bun that was about as flavoursome as a cardboard box and that new secret sauce, the whole thing just didn’t work as my face resembled Vecnas after a few palatable bites.
On top of that, the burger just seemed tiny, much smaller than a normal chicken zinger (unless it was just mine on this occasion). Nothing special in the slightest, it’s just a poor attempt to jack up the price and promote the series.
£3.99 for 3 small wings, you’re having a laugh KFC and for the burger on its own, £7.99!!!
I’m all for fast food chains trying out different things and I absolutely loved the Minecraft McDonald’s collaboration earlier this year with the new hot sauce addition. Sadly, on this occasion, the KFC collab just did not hit home at all.
It’s £9.49 for a burger meal and it wasn’t even a nice meal but the wings certainly hit the spot. I wouldn’t say it was a strong heat, it’s certainly just enough to introduce a beginner to a spicier meal, but chilli heads will definitely laugh at this weak effort.
If the wings were a Stranger Things character, they would be Will.
Under-utilised and under-appreciated.
Well, until Season 5 that is as it looks like Will is set to become the real star of the show.
Maybe my taste buds are getting a little more sensitive as I get older, but I’d give a heavy swipe left on this particular burger.
