When Papa Smurf (John Goodman) is mysteriously taken by evil wizards, Razamel and Gargamel, Smurfette (Rihanna) leads the Smurfs on a mission into the real world to save him. With the help of new friends, the Smurfs must discover what defines their destiny to save the universe.
I rather liked the last Smurfs series instalment starring Neil Patrick Harris, it had heart, cheesy family values and it was good fun. Up rolls the new Smurfs trailer here in 2025 for the latest remake and it’s bad… so… so bad.
Before the social media keyboard warriors go hard on this particular movie I thought I’d just briefly share my thoughts without ripping it to shreds entirely.

Rhianna voicing Smurfette (who will also be providing her own music), James Corden, Daniel Levy, Nick Kroll, Hannah Waddingham and more all lend their hand to the voice cast which is stacked but my first question is, what on earth is going on with the animations?
The Smurfs look absolutely dreadful compared to the 2011 family comedy where they seemed more realistic but this time they’ve cartoonised them and made them look rather ridiculous when they’re in their real-world setting.
It’s not just the animations either as despite a stellar voice cast some of the characters and their voices just seem off, like really off and out of place and I can’t imagine this was a cheap movie to make but the trailer makes it feel very low budget indeed.
John Goodman as Papa Smurf is probably the best decision of the entire casting. Give whoever made that decision a heavy raise and a glass of scotch to help erase the box office numbers from memory when this film releases in July and may not live up to studio expectations.
Whilst the film animation of the Smurfs is heavily inspired by the comics it just doesn’t seem to gel within this particular trailer and unfortunately, there are a few movies in a year’s slate that look to flop and sadly, this looks to be one of them.
Sony’s 2011 movie was a real gem and the sequel in 2013 wasn’t too bad either but on this occasion, maybe they should have just left it alone.
